minus20degree 2012

The inaugural m20d event was originally conceived as an excuse to play and experiment with snow. With the initial vision of projecting onto snow, a snow cinema was created. It quickly turned into a short film festival featuring a selection of works …

The first edition of minus20degree marked the starting point of what would later develop into a biennial dedicated to artistic production under winter conditions. It originated with a simple premise—part curiosity, part excuse—to experiment with snow as a working surface. Early ideas of projecting directly onto the landscape led to the construction of a snow cinema: temporary, site-specific, and shaped by the limits of temperature and light.

This initial experiment resulted in a short film screening featuring works by internationally recognised artists. Building on this foundation, subsequent editions expanded the biennial’s scope, bringing together practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and national contexts. From the outset, minus20degree established the alpine environment not as a backdrop, but as an active medium—one that continues to shape its evolving programme.
